520 3    |a These distinctive French nationals were immigrants from St. Bart's, and St. Eustatius, who produced eye-catching craft items. The photograph shows them bringing bunches of bananas down the hilly slopes of St. Thomas's North Side, the cool windward side of the island, with its frequent showers that makes the area conducive for vegetable and fruit farming. The wooden boxes carrying the unripe bananas, replaced woven baskets made of grass that they had earlier brought to St. Thomas. The white clothing was a French signature, setting these farmers apart from others. Panama hats were woven from grass that covered the hills of not-yet-developed hillsides.
