|a "Genetic connectivity of the red hind, Epinephelus guttatus, an aggregate spawning reef associated grouper, was assessed using 10 microsatellite markers with fish sampled from three islands in the northeastern Lesser Antilles (St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Saba). Spawning aggregations occur at very predictable times each year, and with high site fidelity, making the red hind especially vulnerable to the deleterious effects of overfishing in the absence of protective measures. Based on what is known about red hind population genetics and connectivity patterns in the region, slight yet significant genetic divergence was expected between fish sampled form the U.S. Virgin Islands when compared to the island of Saba in the Netherland Antilles. No significant differences in genetic variation, allele frequencies, or genetic differentiation were detected after statistical analysis" |
