- The leading initiator in the project to design an official College seal last academic year was Ronald Roebuck, who at that time was a junior. He requested and received approval from the Administrative Council to conduct an institution-wide contest for the best design.
In the design, the three islands in the sun represent St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix----the U.S. Virgin Islands, which the College was established to serve. The design symbolizes the radiation of knowledge and culture (the book), especially West Indian culture (the tetraskele), to all and, in particular, to the Caribbean area (the palm tree).
The appointed judging committee consisted of Roebuck; Dr. Mauricio Escardo, professor of philosophy and modern languages; Mary Ann Griles, another student on the St. Thomas campus; Melba Biggs, director of the Upward Bound program and headquartered on St. Croix; Beatrice York, a student on the St. Croix campus, and President Lawrence C. Wanlass.
Design entries were submitted to the commitee and the final design was a compilation of ideas based on those entries. The final design was drawn by Dr. Escardo and presented by him and Roebuck for the approval of the Administrative Council. The Council adopted the design for use as the CVI emblem and recommended that it be forwarded to the Board of Trustees for approval as the official College seal.
